YouTube to start streaming in AV2 codec in early 2027
YouTube confirmed it will begin streaming in the AV2 codec in early 2027, initially on the web version and with software decoding. The format, driven by the Alliance for Open Media (Google, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Samsung and Intel), offers 30% more efficiency than AV1. More than 90% of YouTube's catalog is already encoded in AV1. Chrome, Meta, Prime Video and Netflix have reaffirmed their support, while Intel moved AV2 development into the practical implementation phase.
