SoftBank, OpenAI, Nvidia and MGX Deploy $500B Into Stargate 1.2 GW Texas AI Superclusters and ERCOT Power Grids

Led by financial chair SoftBank Group (TYO: 9984), operational lead OpenAI, Abu Dhabi's MGX, and technology partner Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), the $500 billion Stargate joint venture combines sovereign equity with project-finance debt to scale 7–8 GW of U.S. AI campuses, anchored by its 1.2 GW Texas flagship.

Starting with an initial $100 billion deployment wave overseen by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and SEC disclosures, Stargate's operational 1.2-gigawatt campus in Abilene, Texas—developed with Crusoe Energy Systems on the ERCOT power grid and operated with Oracle (NYSE: ORCL), Arm (NASDAQ: ARM), and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT)—houses hundreds of thousands of liquid-cooled Nvidia GB200 and Vera Rubin racks.

As construction expands across additional Texas counties, Ohio, and New Mexico, Wall Street lenders are underwriting tens of billions in non-recourse infrastructure debt backed by OpenAI's long-term compute off-take agreements. Can ERCOT grid interconnections and enterprise AI cash flows sustain $500 billion in leveraged supercluster CapEx?

Can Stargate's $500B project-finance model deliver returns on 7-8 GW?

  • Sovereign equity and project debt will fund the $500B buildout0 %
  • ERCOT grid bottlenecks and GPU obsolescence will cap returns0 %
  • Depends on OpenAI off-take cash flows and DOE power permits0 %
